According to the La Porte County Coroner’s Office, Javon was shot three times and later died at Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City. His death has left family members devastated, struggling to accept the sudden and senseless loss of a young life filled with promise.

Loved ones are remembering Javon as a bright and energetic young man who brought laughter, kindness, and positive energy wherever he went. Those closest to him say he was more than a student—he was a son, a grandson, a brother, a cousin, and a friend whose presence meant everything to the people who loved him.

“He’ll never have the chance to graduate, go to a senior prom. It’s just so much of life he’s going to miss out on senselessly,” said his grandmother, Alesia Vinson, describing the overwhelming pain of losing him. “It hurts. But when it knocks at your door, it’s a feeling that you just can’t fathom.”

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. at a home in the 1700 block of Liberty Avenue in Pine Township, just outside Michigan City, according to Porter County sheriff’s police. Authorities said the home was hosting what was believed to be a post-prom gathering, attended by numerous high school students.

Two other young people were also shot during the incident: an 18-year-old woman, identified by family as Ginger White, and another male juvenile. Ginger’s mother said her daughter had just arrived at the party when gunfire erupted.

“She had just gotten out of her car, and that’s when everything blew up,” her mother said. “She heard the shots. She took off running… she realized she had been hit… and rolled underneath a car.”

Both Ginger White and the juvenile victim remain hospitalized in Chicago, as their families anxiously wait for updates and continue to pray for their recovery.

Neighbors described a chaotic and terrifying scene, saying gunfire erupted suddenly and young people fled in fear. Some nearby homes reportedly had windows damaged by gunfire, but no other injuries were reported. Neighbors also said the home where the shooting occurred is often rented out to vacationers visiting the area near the Indiana Dunes.

Family members say the loss has been unbearable. Javon’s cousin, Jason Mojica, expressed deep sorrow, saying he could do nothing but cry after learning the news. Javon’s little brother, Jalion Yates, also shared emotional words, remembering Javon as someone who always brought “good vibes” and was loved by everyone around him.

Michigan City Area Schools confirmed the incident involved students and issued a statement offering condolences and support. The district said counseling and additional resources would be made available for students and staff as the community processes the tragedy.

Police said the shooting is believed to have been an isolated incident and may have started with a fight. Investigators are continuing to gather information, interview witnesses, and work toward identifying those responsible.

A $5,000 reward is now being offered for information connected to the shooting.

As the investigation continues, loved ones are left mourning a young life taken far too soon. Javon Townsend’s death has left a painful void in his school, his neighborhood, and in the hearts of everyone who knew him. His memory will live on through the love he gave, the joy he brought, and the dreams that will now be carried forward by those who will never forget him.
