A66 Teesside Crash: Cleveland Police Officers PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough Among Seven Killed in Tragic Collision

The Teesside community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of seven people who died in a devastating collision on the A66 near South Bank, close to Middlesbrough, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Among those killed were Cleveland Police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, who are being remembered as dedicated public servants who committed their lives to protecting their communities.

According to authorities, the fatal crash occurred at around 3:39 a.m. when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the A66 collided with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle travelling in the correct direction. All occupants of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.

The deaths of PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough have sent shockwaves through Cleveland Police and the wider policing community. Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described the incident as an “incredibly sad day” and paid tribute to the officers as brave individuals who served residents and protected their communities.

Beyond their roles as police officers, Matthew and Tom were loved members of their families and communities. Colleagues, friends, and fellow officers are now reflecting on their commitment, professionalism, and the sacrifices made while carrying out their duties.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the incident, as is required following a fatal crash involving police contact. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries continue.
