Two people have died following the crash of a small aircraft in a mountainous area near Telluride, Colorado, on Thursday afternoon, September 3, 2026, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal incident occurred near Dolores Peak, approximately 15 miles southwest of Telluride, prompting a major search-and-rescue response in the rugged mountain terrain.
Authorities said the aircraft was a single-engine Cessna 206 that went missing shortly before 3:45 p.m. after a report of smoke in the area. Dolores Peak rises to approximately 13,296 feet, presenting significant challenges for emergency crews and search teams responding to the remote crash site.
According to preliminary information, the aircraft had departed from Grand Junction after refueling and was conducting survey and mapping operations when the incident occurred.
Denver Air Traffic Control reported the aircraft missing, while a member of the public alerted authorities after seeing smoke near Dolores Peak. The reports prompted emergency personnel and search-and-rescue teams to begin efforts to locate the aircraft.
