Linda Jean Croteau Obituary, Cause of Death: 71-Year-Old Dies After Police Encounter in Port Orange
PORT ORANGE, FLORIDA — The Port Orange community is mourning the tragic death of Linda Jean Croteau, 71, following an encounter with police officers outside the city’s police department Thursday.
According to Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino, Croteau entered the police department lobby at approximately 8 a.m. while carrying a firearm. Police said she interacted with staff members before brandishing the weapon and firing a shot toward an area where employees were working.
Croteau then left the lobby and was confronted by responding officers. Authorities said she continued to hold the firearm and refused officers’ commands to drop it.
Three officers subsequently fired their weapons, striking Croteau. She was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment but later died from her injuries.
None of the officers involved was injured during the encounter.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation as authorities work to establish a complete account of what led to the confrontation.
