The Lima community is mourning the loss of a true broadcasting icon. Mark “Spark Simon” Schmiesing, a man whose voice became the soundtrack to countless lives in West Central Ohio, has passed away peacefully at home following recent health challenges.
Spark Simon was more than just a radio personality; he was a foundational architect of the local airwaves. His legacy is inextricably linked to the birth of WZOQ (92 ZOO), an iconic contemporary hit radio station that revolutionized the region’s listening experience. Starting in 1986, Spark helped pioneer the high-energy “Zoo” format, bringing a sense of excitement and modern energy to Lima that had never been heard before.
His career was a masterclass in radio evolution. From his early days at WAXY to the groundbreaking launch of 92 ZOO, Spark remained a constant, driving force in the industry. In the 1990s, he played a pivotal role in cementing “107.5 THE BIG BUCK” in the public conscience, before returning to his roots at 92 ZOO. He further solidified his legendary status by helping to co-launch the cult-favorite 93X alongside “Big Jim Edwards,” proving his ability to connect with diverse audiences and create lasting cultural moments.
Beyond the microphone, Spark’s influence extended into the community and local entertainment. All of us at Limaland Motorsports Park are deeply saddened by this loss. Spark was instrumental in the success of the Park during the early years of ownership by the University of Northwestern Ohio, lending his unmistakable energy to the venue and helping to build its local prominence.
