Reese Allen and Kyle McKinney Car Accident: Reese Allen, 18, and Kyle McKinney, 17, Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-70 Near Rifle
A heartbreaking wrong-way collision on Interstate 70 has claimed the lives of Reese Allen, 18, of Silt, and Kyle McKinney, 17, of Glenwood Springs, leaving family, friends, and loved ones grieving the loss of two young lives taken far too soon.
The crash happened at approximately 2:36 a.m. Sunday near mile marker 93 in the westbound lanes of I-70, just east of Rifle, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Authorities said McKinney was driving a blue 2022 Subaru eastbound in the left westbound lane when the vehicle collided head-on with Allen’s gray 2004 GMC Yukon. Investigators said Allen was traveling westbound in the left lane while passing an orange 2026 Peterbilt semi-truck pulling a trailer when the collision occurred. The Yukon then struck the trailer following the initial impact.
Both Allen and McKinney were pronounced deceased at the scene. The 35-year-old driver of the Peterbilt was not injured in the crash.
The Garfield County Coroner’s Office responded shortly after the collision. Autopsies conducted Monday determined that both teenagers died from blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. The preliminary manner of death for both was ruled an accident, while the full circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
Reese and Kyle were more than names connected to a tragic crash. They were young men with families who loved them, friendships they valued, and futures that were still beginning to unfold.
Their unexpected passing has left two communities mourning as loved ones remember the lives, memories, and moments they shared with them.
