Troopers responded around 9 a.m. on May 11 to a crash on U.S. Highway 77 near County Road 203 Loop, where eastbound traffic was stopped due to a construction flagger as part of a TxDOT pavement project near Cameron. Officials said the roadway was reduced to one lane, with traffic being directed through the work zone by a pilot vehicle.

Investigators said a 2018 Dodge SUV, driven by a 40-year-old man from Killeen, was approaching stopped traffic when the driver failed to control his speed and struck the rear of a 2023 Chevrolet SUV that was stationary in line.

Authorities identified the driver of the Chevrolet as 68-year-old Amelia Reyes Mendoza of Cameron.

The initial impact triggered a chain-reaction collision involving three additional vehicles. Five people were transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, with injuries ranging from non-incapacitating to incapacitating.

DPS confirmed Mendoza later died from her injuries and was pronounced deceased. Next of kin have been notified.

The crash remains under investigation by Texas DPS.
