The community is mourning the tragic passing of Donika Gocaj, 56, of Briarcliff Manor, New York, a beloved mother and grandmother whose life was cut short following a devastating accident in Midtown Manhattan on Monday night.
According to authorities, Gocaj fell into an uncovered manhole near East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue around 11:20 p.m. after stepping out of her parked vehicle. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and pulled her from the opening before transporting her to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.
Her sudden passing has left family and loved ones in profound grief as they struggle to process the unexpected tragedy. Described as a devoted mother and grandmother, Gocaj is remembered for her love of family and the strong bonds she shared with those closest to her.
Loved ones shared that she had recently celebrated joyful milestones, including her son’s wedding in Cancun, Mexico, just months before her passing. She is also remembered in connection to her daughter’s work as co-founder of SISTERWOULD, a company inspired by supporting individuals with visual impairments.
Utility company Con Edison has stated it is investigating how the manhole remained uncovered at the time of the incident. Officials expressed condolences and stated that safety remains a top priority as the investigation continues.
