The community of Charlestown, Rhode Island, is mourning the heartbreaking and sudden loss of 21-year-old Isaac Seekell, who died following a tragic plane crash on Monday near Westerly.
According to the Westerly Fire Department, emergency dispatchers were alerted shortly after noon to reports of a small aircraft crash near Airport Road. The incident was initially believed to involve fire, prompting a rapid response from multiple agencies. Upon arrival, crews determined the aircraft had gone down in a field near the Stop & Shop area, across from the airport.
Fire personnel confirmed there was no active fire at the scene, while EMS immediately began rendering aid to the pilot. Additional rescue personnel were requested as responders worked to stabilize the situation. Despite their efforts, Seekell was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased from his injuries.
Authorities identified the victim as Isaac Seekell of Charlestown, a young man remembered for his dedication and ambition. He attended Chariho High School and later continued his education and athletic involvement at the Word of Life Bible Institute in New York, where he played soccer. He was also pursuing his passion for aviation through training at a local flight school.
The incident drew a coordinated response from multiple agencies, including the Westerly Fire Department, T.F. Green Airport officials, the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and Rhode Island State Police, all of whom assisted at the scene.
The NTSB has launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash, which remains ongoing as officials work to determine what led to the aircraft going down.
Residents near Westerly State Airport described a sudden and unsettling emergency response as crews converged on the area and secured the crash site near the treeline. Some neighbors noted the proximity of the crash to nearby residential areas, expressing relief that no additional injuries were reported on the ground.
Seekell, 21, was from Charlestown, a coastal Washington County community located just west of Westerly. He had been actively training in aviation, working toward building flight experience in a widely used training aircraft.
