Officers were called to the 1000 block of Hyacinth Drive on May 19, just before 9 p.m., after reports of a person shot. When they arrived, they found 30-year-old Martez Rashad Dunner of Birmingham suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Dunner was transported to UAB Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators say a man was inside his home when he heard a noise outside. He went outside to investigate and reportedly saw Dunner attempting to get into his vehicle. Police say a physical altercation occurred, during which a single gunshot was fired, striking Dunner.

Authorities said the man involved remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. He was taken to Birmingham Police headquarters for questioning and placed on a 48-hour felony extension as the investigation continues.

The Jefferson County Coroner confirmed Dunner had been reported missing prior to the incident, according to Birmingham Police and family members.

Birmingham Police said this marks the city’s 17th homicide of the year.
