Police in Windsor are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the city’s east-end area, prompting a response from Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Authorities confirmed that the incident involved Windsor Police officers and resulted in at least one person sustaining serious injuries.
According to preliminary information released by the Windsor Police Service, officers responded to a reported robbery shortly after 6 p.m. in the 3200 block of Sandwich Street. Police say the suspect was later located near Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street West, where officers encountered a man allegedly armed with a knife. During the confrontation, police discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.
The injured individual was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to investigators. The area around Rankin Avenue remained closed for several hours as officers secured the scene and SIU investigators gathered evidence. Witnesses in the neighborhood described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a large police presence shortly afterward.
Because the incident involved police use of force resulting in serious injury, the investigation has now been taken over by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, the independent civilian agency responsible for examining incidents involving police across the province. Windsor Police officials stated they are unable to provide additional details while the SIU investigation remains active.
