A Friday morning crash in Elmore County claimed the life of an Opelika man and left an Auburn driver injured, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 6:52 a.m. on Rock Springs Road, about 10 miles from Tallassee.
ALEA identified the victim as 56-year-old Bonifacio Angel Bartolon of Opelika. Investigators said Bartolon was a passenger in a Toyota that left the roadway, overturned, and struck a ditch along with multiple trees, resulting in fatal injuries.
The driver, identified as 39-year-old Mynor Ramirez Joel Morales of Auburn, was injured in the crash. He was transported to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery for treatment. Officials have not released an update on his condition.
According to ALEA, the circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation. Troopers with the agency’s Highway Patrol Division are leading the ongoing inquiry.
At this time, no further details have been released regarding what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
The incident remains an active investigation as authorities work to determine the factors involved in the fatal crash.
