A devastating murder-suicide in Muscatine has left seven people dead, including the suspected shooter, after authorities say a man carried out a series of shootings across multiple locations on Monday, June 1, 2026.
According to the Muscatine Police Department, 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland is accused of shooting and killing six individuals, including his wife, 51-year-old Lesa McFarland, and multiple other family members before turning the weapon on himself.
Officers were first dispatched at approximately 12:12 p.m. to a residence in the 2100 block of Park Avenue, where they discovered four victims inside suffering from gunshot wounds. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say McFarland fled the home before police arrived, prompting an immediate search. He was later located on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge, where officers found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts by emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As the investigation continued, authorities say additional victims were discovered at two separate locations. One adult male was found deceased at a residence in the 1500 block of Mill Street, and another adult was located deceased at a business address on Grand Avenue. Officials believe all of the victims were connected to McFarland and that the violence stemmed from a domestic dispute.
In total, seven people were killed, including the suspect. Authorities have not yet released the identities of all victims pending family notification. Officials confirmed that McFarland had a prior criminal history, though details have not been disclosed.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the Muscatine community. In a statement, Muscatine Community School District officials confirmed that two district employees and two students were among those killed in the incident. The district announced that counselors and support services would be made available at multiple schools beginning Tuesday morning.
Those schools include Muscatine High School, Susan Clark Junior High, Madison Elementary, McKinley Elementary, and Franklin Elementary, where grief support teams will assist students and staff.
Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing as they work to fully reconstruct the timeline of events and confirm all details surrounding the case.
