Malik Javonn Somerville Obituary, MECHANICSVILLE, MD — A 27-year-old Chaptico man has died following a tragic single-vehicle crash Tuesday morning after his pickup truck left the roadway and struck a utility pole before crashing into a group of trees along Thompson Corner Road in St. Mary’s County, authorities said.
The victim has been identified as Malik Javonn Somerville, 27, of Chaptico. His death was confirmed by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office following the fatal collision that occurred in the Mechanicsville area.
According to officials, emergency personnel responded at approximately 7:40 a.m. on June 30, 2026, to the 27500 block of Thompson Corner Road after multiple 911 callers reported a serious crash involving a vehicle rollover and an entrapped driver who was unconscious and possibly deceased.
Dispatch reports indicated that callers could see the driver trapped inside the vehicle following the impact. Firefighters, deputies, and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene where they discovered a green 2003 Chevrolet Silverado that had left the roadway while traveling eastbound.
A preliminary investigation by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit determined that the pickup truck veered off the road for reasons still under investigation, struck a utility pole, and continued into a stand of trees. The force of the crash left the vehicle heavily damaged and the driver trapped inside the wreckage.
Despite rapid response efforts, Somerville was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command was placed on standby in case air medical transport was needed, but it was ultimately not required due to the severity of the incident.
Authorities stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing. While the exact cause has not been determined, preliminary findings suggest that speed and driver error may have been contributing factors in the crash. Officials have confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken with law enforcement to contact Lieutenant Brian Connelly of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office at 301-475-4200, extension 8031, or via email at Brian.Connelly@stmaryscountymd.gov.
The investigation continues as authorities work to fully determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash. Malik Javonn Somerville is remembered as his loved ones mourn his sudden passing. May he rest in peace.
