AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect Saturday morning near the YMCA in downtown Austin.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. in the 1100 block of West Cesar Chavez Street. Police responded to the area following an encounter that ultimately led to an officer discharging a weapon.
According to officials, the suspect was struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the individual’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public, and the situation has been fully contained. No Austin police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not yet been disclosed. Investigators are expected to examine body-worn camera footage, interview witnesses, and collect evidence from the scene as part of the standard investigative process following any officer-involved shooting.
The area surrounding West Cesar Chavez Street near the YMCA was temporarily secured while detectives and crime scene personnel processed the scene. Traffic disruptions were reported as authorities conducted their investigation.
