Family, friends, and the Council Bluffs, Iowa, community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Lucas Michael “Luke” Spanjer, who passed away at the age of 23 on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. His untimely passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, while countless memories of his kindness, loyalty, and vibrant spirit continue to bring comfort to those grieving.

Born on March 10, 2003, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Luke was the beloved son of Brian and Cheri (Swearingen) Spanjer. From an early age, he developed a passion for sports, participating in soccer, basketball, football, and track throughout his years at Hoover Elementary, Kirn Middle School, and Abraham Lincoln High School. Teammates and coaches remember him as an encouraging competitor whose positive attitude and dedication made him a valued friend both on and off the field.

Luke graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 2021 after participating in the Trade Works program, which helped prepare him for a successful career in the skilled trades. He became a member of the I.U.O.E. Local 571, working as an equipment operator before pursuing a new opportunity with Pipefitters Union Local 464. Known for his strong work ethic, Luke took great pride in learning new skills and was always eager to lend a hand, especially alongside his father and Uncle Mark in the family workshop.

Outside of work, Luke embraced life with enthusiasm. He enjoyed motocross racing at Westfair MX, hunting pheasants with friends, and spending quality time with his cousins and loved ones. His easygoing personality, sense of humor, and unwavering loyalty made him someone people naturally gravitated toward. Whether sharing adventures outdoors or simply enjoying time with family, Luke created lasting memories that will forever be treasured.

As family members navigate this unimaginable loss, friends have also come together to offer support, establishing a fundraiser to help ease the financial burden associated with this unexpected tragedy so the Spanjer family can focus on grieving and honoring Luke’s life.

Luke was preceded in death by his grandmother, Cheryl Swearingen. He is lovingly remembered by his parents, Brian and Cheri Spanjer; his sister, McKenzie Spanjer; his grandparents, Jeff Swearingen and Steve and Pat Gosch; along with his uncles, cousins, extended family, and countless friends whose lives he touched.

A visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be directed by the family in Luke’s honor.

Though his life was far too short, Lucas Michael “Luke” Spanjer will be remembered for his compassionate heart, hardworking spirit, and the love he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
