BIDDEFORD, Maine — The fatal shooting of a Colombian immigrant by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Biddeford, Maine, has drawn national attention after the man’s family said he had legal authorization to live and work in the United States, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
The victim, identified as Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, was fatally shot during an ICE operation near his residence. According to the Department of Homeland Security, officers were conducting surveillance related to an individual with a final order of removal when they attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Durán Guerrero. Officials said an officer discharged a weapon after the vehicle allegedly attempted to flee, describing the action as necessary because of an immediate public safety concern.
However, Durán Guerrero’s family has disputed aspects of the government’s account. His father and other relatives have maintained that he possessed legal work authorization while his immigration case was pending. Advocates and family members also say he was not the intended target of the enforcement operation and had been building a life in Maine while supporting his young daughter.
The shooting has prompted renewed debate over immigration enforcement practices and the use of deadly force during federal operations. Community members and immigrant rights organizations have held vigils and called for a transparent, independent investigation into the incident, while elected officials have requested additional information from federal authorities regarding the circumstances of the shooting.
