Bob Montgomery spent his final days doing what had defined much of his life—using his passion for cycling to help others. At the age of 82, the former New South Wales state cyclist completed an extraordinary journey from Broome in Western Australia to Bowral in New South Wales, covering approximately 5,290 kilometers alongside his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Malcolm.

The six-week fundraising challenge, known as “One Last Ride,” marked Bob’s sixth major long-distance cycling effort in support of Motor Neurone Disease NSW. The cause held deep personal meaning for Bob after the loss of his cousin, Judith O’Brien, to MND. Her passing inspired his commitment to raising awareness and supporting families affected by the disease.

Through his years of fundraising rides, Bob became known for his determination, generosity, and willingness to push himself for a greater purpose. Before beginning his final journey, he had raised more than $200,000 through his cycling efforts, leaving behind a powerful legacy of service and compassion.

Bob and Tom received a warm welcome from family, friends, and supporters after completing the remarkable ride. The achievement was a moment of celebration and pride for everyone who had followed their journey.

Tragically, that celebration soon turned into heartbreak. Bob passed away unexpectedly the following day after experiencing a medical episode while returning from a function in Sydney. Reports indicate that emergency services provided treatment before he was transported to St George Hospital, where he later died.

News of Bob’s passing has left family, friends, cycling communities, and supporters mourning the loss of a remarkable individual whose life was defined by perseverance and helping others.

Those who knew Bob are remembering him not only as an accomplished cyclist but also as a compassionate advocate who dedicated his time and energy to making a difference. His final ride reflected the values he carried throughout his life—courage, generosity, and a commitment to supporting others.

Bob Montgomery’s legacy will continue through the thousands of people inspired by his determination, the funds he raised for MND awareness, and the memories shared by everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
