A rural Kansas community is mourning the tragic death of 59-year-old John Kanelakos, who was found deceased after an extensive overnight search in a watershed east of Silverdale.
According to Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti, deputies were first called to the area around 2:45 a.m. after a property owner noticed Kanelakos’ truck parked nearby with the engine still running, but no sign of him in the immediate area. The unusual circumstances quickly raised concern and prompted a search of the surrounding rural terrain.
As deputies began their initial sweep, they discovered a pair of boots near the edge of the water, suggesting Kanelakos may have entered the watershed. With no immediate sign of the missing man, additional emergency resources were requested to assist in the search effort.
Multiple agencies responded, including the Arkansas City Fire Department, which launched boats into the water. Canine units, mounted search teams, and a dive team from the Augusta Department of Public Safety also joined the operation as the search continued through the early morning hours.
After several hours of coordinated searching, the dive team located Kanelakos’ body in the watershed at approximately 10:30 a.m. Authorities confirmed he was recovered from the water and pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary information suggests Kanelakos may have entered the water in an attempt to rescue a calf, though officials say this has not yet been confirmed. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The tragic loss has deeply impacted the Silverdale area, where residents are remembering Kanelakos and the possible compassion behind his final moments. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to fully reconstruct the events leading to the incident.
