A tragic act of violence inside a Portland group home has left one woman dead and a resident facing a murder charge.
Portland Police confirmed Tuesday that Armando Javier Negrete, 40, has been arrested in connection with the death of Marlene McNeill, 40, of Gorham. The deadly incident occurred at Shalom House, a residential facility located at 503 Woodford Street, near the intersection of Woodford Street and Rosemont Avenue.
According to investigators, the stabbing happened just before 10 a.m. Monday. Police said McNeill was attacked inside the building, with the crime scene located in a back hallway of the residence. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and McNeill was transported to MaineHealth Maine Medical Center for treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, she later died from her injuries.
The incident triggered a major emergency response, including the evacuation of multiple residents from the facility. Authorities stated that some individuals were removed from the building using a fire department ladder truck to ensure their safety during the response.
Negrete was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Cumberland County Jail, where he remains held as the case proceeds.
Shalom House is known for providing housing and support services to adults living with mental illness, making the tragedy especially painful for residents, staff, and the Portland community.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine the circumstances and motive behind the fatal attack.
