The community of Amsterdam is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jose Che Lozada, an elderly e-bike rider who tragically lost his life following a suspected hit-and-run crash at a busy intersection.
According to the Amsterdam Police Department, the fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Guy Park Avenue and Wall Street, where Lozada was riding an electric bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle. Despite rapid emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
Authorities said multiple units and crash reconstruction teams responded to the scene, shutting down the area for several hours as investigators worked to gather evidence and reconstruct the moments leading up to the crash.
Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle involved may have been a dark-colored SUV, though officials have not confirmed a description of the driver. Investigators also noted they are examining whether Lozada may have failed to yield at a stop sign; however, they emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Police believe the driver may have fled the scene immediately after the collision, and efforts continue to identify and locate the suspect vehicle.
As the investigation unfolds, Jose Che Lozada is being remembered with deep sadness by family, friends, and neighbors. His passing has left a painful void in the community, where loved ones are holding onto cherished memories while calling for justice and safer streets for all vulnerable road users.
