Authorities have launched a homicide investigation following a fatal shooting that left a 31-year-old man dead late Wednesday night in the city of New Bedford, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn, III.

New Bedford Police said officers responded shortly after 11:30 p.m. to a ShotSpotter alert reporting gunfire in the area of Acushnet Avenue and Russell Street. When officers arrived, they located a victim a short distance away on Russell Street inside a 2022 gray Honda Accord, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim was identified as Steven Coan, 31, of New Bedford. Emergency medical personnel transported Coan to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead a short time after arrival.

Officials confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are now being treated as a homicide. The investigation is being led by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, working in coordination with New Bedford Police Major Crimes Detectives and the Violent Crime Intelligence Unit.

Authorities have not released any information regarding a possible suspect or motive at this stage of the investigation.

Officials emphasized that the case remains active and ongoing, and additional updates will be released as investigators continue to gather evidence and follow leads.
