Authorities in Chicago are investigating a shooting that left a 79-year-old man injured early Sunday morning in the city’s Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Police say the elderly victim was shot after opening the door to an individual following a verbal dispute inside his apartment building.

Incident Happened on West Erie Street

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded around 2:35 a.m. to the 5000 block of West Erie Street after receiving reports of a person shot.

Investigators say the 79-year-old victim had been involved in a verbal altercation with another individual shortly before the shooting occurred.

Victim Shot After Answering Door

Police reported that an unknown individual knocked on the victim’s apartment door sometime after the argument. When the man opened the door, he immediately heard a gunshot and realized he had been struck in the finger.

Authorities stated that the victim was unable to identify the shooter.

Victim Hospitalized in Good Condition

Emergency medical personnel responded quickly and treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Loretto Hospital.

Officials said the victim was listed in good condition, and the injury was not considered life-threatening.

Area Detectives Continue Investigation

Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and working to determine:

Who fired the shot
Whether the victim knew the suspect
What led to the initial altercation
If surveillance footage or witness accounts may help identify the offender
