Just after 7:00 a.m. on May 13, 2026, the peaceful silence near the intersection of Kinsman Road and Prairie Road was shattered by the sound of a horrific collision that would forever change multiple lives in a matter of seconds.

According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, deputies rushed to the scene around 7:09 a.m. following reports of a serious two-vehicle accident involving a driver who had been ejected from a vehicle. But by the time emergency crews arrived, the damage was already catastrophic.

Twisted metal, shattered glass, and emergency lights filled the intersection as first responders fought desperately to save a young man whose life was slipping away right there on the roadway.

Investigators say Carlin was driving a red 2002 Ford Ranger pickup truck eastbound on Prairie Road approaching the stop sign at Kinsman Road. At the same time, a brown 2013 Ford Escape driven by a 22-year-old woman from Kinsman was traveling northbound through the intersection.

Authorities believe the pickup truck failed to stop before entering the intersection directly into the path of the SUV. In one terrifying instant, the Ford Escape slammed violently into the passenger side of the truck, causing the pickup to roll over with tremendous force.

During the rollover, Carlin was ejected from the vehicle because he was not wearing a seat belt, investigators said.

The violent impact left the truck mangled and destroyed as emergency crews worked frantically to save him. Seneca EMS rushed Carlin from the scene to Morris Hospital while loved ones could only pray for a miracle.

But despite every life-saving effort made by first responders and hospital staff, the young man later succumbed to his injuries.

Grundy County Coroner John Callahan officially confirmed Carlin’s death, sending waves of grief through Streator and surrounding communities as friends and family struggled to process the unimaginable loss.

The driver of the Ford Escape sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment at the scene.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to the heartbreaking crash, including Seneca Fire Department and EMS, Verona/Kinsman Fire Department, and Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Ambulance Service, all working together during the tragic aftermath.

Now, those who knew and loved Carlin are left trying to make sense of a morning that began like any other but ended with heartbreak no family is ever prepared to face.

To the community, this was more than just another fatal accident report. Carlin J. McGarvey was a son, a friend, a loved one, and a young man with an entire future still ahead of him. His sudden passing leaves behind shattered hearts, painful memories, and the kind of silence that follows unimaginable grief.
