A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Wednesday afternoon at Chimney Rock on Lake Martin, where a graduation celebration among friends ended in unimaginable sorrow after 24-year-old Jayden Baretta of Georgia lost his life in the waters below the towering bluff.
According to Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin, authorities received a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. reporting that a young man had jumped from the rocks into the water and failed to resurface. Within moments, emergency crews rushed to the scene as panic and fear spread among the dozens gathered along the Tallapoosa River shoreline.
Sheriff Franklin said Jayden had traveled from Columbus, Georgia, with a large group of friends to spend the day celebrating graduation and enjoying the scenic waters of Lake Martin. What was meant to be a joyful occasion quickly transformed into a devastating nightmare witnessed by many of those closest to him.
“He was there with a bunch of friends from Columbus, Georgia, having a graduation celebration,” Franklin said. “He jumped off the rock and never came up.”
Authorities reported that nearly two dozen people were present at the time of the incident, many of them lifelong friends and classmates who had come together to mark a major milestone in their lives. Instead, they were left standing helplessly along the rocks, praying for a miracle as rescue efforts intensified in the dangerous waters below.
Divers from the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, alongside Montgomery Fire and Rescue teams, entered the water and began an extensive search along the steep bluff area near Chimney Rock. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Patrol also responded, keeping nearby boats away from the search zone to allow divers to safely navigate the deep underwater terrain.
After hours of searching, divers eventually located Jayden’s body resting on a rock shelf approximately 50 feet beneath the surface. Sheriff Franklin noted that the rock wall in that area descends to depths of nearly 120 feet, creating extremely hazardous underwater conditions even for experienced swimmers and rescue personnel.
The recovery brought an emotional end to the operation, but for Jayden’s family and friends, the pain is only beginning.
News of the tragedy has sent shockwaves through both the Columbus, Georgia, community and those familiar with the popular Lake Martin destination. Friends and loved ones have already begun sharing messages of grief, disbelief, and remembrance across social media, remembering Jayden as a young man full of life, laughter, and promise.
What should have been a day filled with celebration, memories, and excitement for the future instead became a painful reminder of how quickly life can change in an instant.
As loved ones mourn this devastating loss, many are also reflecting on the dangers associated with cliff jumping and deep-water recreation areas like Chimney Rock, where hidden underwater shelves, unpredictable depths, and strong currents can quickly turn dangerous.
