Authorities have identified the young man who died after a tragic jump from Chimney Rock at Lake Martin in Alabama as 24-year-old Jayden Barreto, of the Columbus, Georgia area.
According to Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin, Barreto was visiting the lake with a group of friends to celebrate a college graduation when the incident occurred. Officials said he jumped from the well-known Chimney Rock overlook and never resurfaced.
Emergency crews were called to the scene, and a multi-hour search effort followed. Divers later located Barreto’s body on a submerged shelf approximately 50 feet below the surface, with the water dropping an additional 70 feet beyond that point.
Sheriff Franklin described the location as extremely dangerous, noting that the impact from such a height can be severe and unpredictable depending on how a person enters the water. He compared the jump to “hitting a sheet of glass from 60 feet up,” emphasizing the force involved and the risks associated with jumping from the rock formation.
Authorities confirmed that recovery efforts were difficult due to the depth and terrain beneath the water. After being recovered, Barreto’s body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, where an autopsy will be conducted.
The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office continues to remind the public of the dangers tied to jumping from Chimney Rock, a popular but hazardous spot at Lake Martin that has seen previous incidents over the years.
Friends, family, and rescuers are now left grieving this sudden loss, as the community reflects on the tragedy and the importance of safety around high-risk recreational areas.
