A 24-year-old Baton Rouge woman lost her life in a tragic late-night crash Wednesday in West Baton Rouge Parish, according to authorities.
Deputies with the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Taniya Smith of Baton Rouge. Officials said the fatal single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. along the northbound lanes of La. 1 near the south side of the Intracoastal Canal Bridge in Port Allen.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after reports of the crash, but Smith suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead following the collision. Authorities have not yet released details regarding how the crash occurred or what may have caused the vehicle to leave control.
Investigators remained at the scene for several hours as they worked to document evidence and determine the sequence of events leading up to the deadly incident. Traffic in the area was affected while emergency crews cleared the roadway and conducted their investigation.
