A devastating crash in Berks County has left one young man dead and another under investigation after authorities say alcohol and/or drugs may have played a role in the collision.
According to Pennsylvania State Police at Reading, the fatal single-vehicle crash occurred around 1:56 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2026, along Bernville Road (SR 183), just north of North 4th Street in Bernville Borough. Troopers reported that a black Tesla sedan, driven by a 23-year-old man from Pottsville, was traveling southbound when the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and slammed into a tree.
The passenger in the vehicle, identified as 23-year-old Keenan Cryts, suffered severe injuries in the violent impact. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and transported Cryts to Reading Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite extensive efforts by medical staff, authorities confirmed that he later died from his injuries at approximately 11:19 p.m. Sunday night.
State Police said the driver survived the crash and is suspected of operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. As of Sunday night, no criminal charges had been filed, though investigators continue working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
Officials also stated that the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while Cryts reportedly was not restrained. The impact caused catastrophic damage to the Tesla and prompted a major response from local fire departments, EMS personnel, and Pennsylvania State Police.
Following Cryts’ death, the Berks County Coroner’s Office and the Berks County District Attorney’s Office joined the investigation. Authorities have not publicly released the name of the driver while the case remains active.
The sudden loss of Keenan Cryts has left family, friends, and members of the community grieving a life taken far too soon. Loved ones continue mourning the 23-year-old as messages of support and condolences pour in following the tragedy.
Pennsylvania State Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact authorities.
