With broken hearts and deep sorrow, we remember and honor the life of John Mendoza Jr., who tragically passed away at the age of 18 in the early morning hours of Monday in Lake Jackson, Texas.
According to officials, the incident began at approximately 12:09 a.m. when a Brazoria County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop near FM 2004 and This Way Street. Authorities stated that the vehicle did not stop, leading to a brief pursuit. The pursuit ended when the vehicle entered the attached garage of a residence on Indian Warrior Trail.
Officials reported that after the deputy encountered the driver, identified as John Mendoza Jr., the deputy discharged his weapon. John was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
According to family attorney Charles Adams, John had spent part of the evening playing basketball with two friends. After returning to a friend’s home, the group reportedly decided to walk at a nearby track. Adams stated that the teens believed they were being watched by police and later left in John’s vehicle before the traffic stop occurred.
As required by department policy, the deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Texas Rangers, the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, and the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office are conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding John’s death.
At this time, authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason for the initial traffic stop, nor have they released additional details regarding the moments leading up to the shooting.
While the investigation continues, John’s family, friends, and loved ones mourn the loss of a young life taken far too soon. Beyond the headlines and ongoing inquiries, John will be remembered for the moments he shared with those who loved him, the friendships he built, and the memories that will forever remain in their hearts.
Though his time on earth was brief, his memory will endure through the lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace, and may his loved ones find strength, comfort, and healing in the days ahead.
