The community of Watkins is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Cameron Mertens, whose life was tragically cut short following a drowning incident on Pleasant Lake in Corinna Township on June 1, 2026.
According to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the lake at approximately 8:18 p.m. after reports of a possible drowning near the public access and dock on the north side of Pleasant Lake. Upon arrival, authorities discovered an overturned kayak near the shoreline where several people had been fishing at the time of the incident.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that Cameron had been fishing from a kayak approximately 75 to 100 yards from the dock when he fell into the water. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing him fall from the kayak, prompting immediate concern and emergency response efforts.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team conducted an extensive search of the water and later recovered Cameron from the lake. Despite efforts to locate and assist him, he was tragically pronounced deceased.
The news of Cameron’s passing has left his family, friends, and the entire Watkins community devastated.
