As the Muscatine community continues to grieve the devastating loss of six family members in a murder-suicide, Johnathan McFarland has shared a heartfelt tribute honoring his mother, siblings, and father.
Authorities say Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, fatally shot his ex-wife, 51-year-old Lesa McFarland, along with five of Johnathan’s siblings — Dakota Whitlow, 32, Austin Harris, 29, Ryle McFarland, 20, Mark McFarland, 16, and Ryan McFarland Jr., 13 — during a series of shootings on June 1, 2026. Investigators later located Ryan McFarland deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In an emotional statement shared following the tragedy, Johnathan reflected on the immense loss facing his family.
“I know this is a very tough time, not just for me. I just wanted to say that I will forever love and miss my mom, Lisa, my sister Riley, my four brothers Dakota, Austin, Mark and Ryan, and this might hurt some people for me to say, but no matter what is being told to me, I will always love and miss my dad,” he said.
Johnathan also spoke about the lives lost and the futures that were taken away by the violence.
“Each of the lives lost in yesterday’s tragedy held incredible potential, which was unjustly taken,” he added.
According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers first responded to a residence on Park Avenue shortly after noon on June 1, where four victims were found deceased from gunshot wounds. As the investigation unfolded, detectives discovered two additional victims at separate locations connected to the case.
Authorities believe the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute. The investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing evidence and reconstructing the timeline of events.
The tragedy has deeply affected the Muscatine community. The Muscatine Community School District confirmed that two employees and two students were among those killed, prompting the district to provide counseling and support services to students, staff, and families.
