The Midland community is grieving after a heartbreaking act of violence claimed the life of Edward Scott, 62, during a devastating mass shooting that unfolded on Friday morning in Midland. His tragic passing has left family members, friends, and loved ones struggling to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
According to authorities, the gunman, identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, of Odessa, carried out the deadly attack shortly after 8:00 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Wall Street. Investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety say Villarreal opened fire on both civilians and responding officers before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, triggering a tense hours-long standoff.
As law enforcement worked to secure the area, chaos and fear spread throughout the community. The incident finally came to an end around 12:30 p.m. when officers discovered Villarreal deceased inside the building. Authorities later confirmed that Edward Scott lost his life during the attack, while ten others suffered injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Investigators have since revealed that Villarreal was already wanted in connection with an attempted capital murder case involving a peace officer. Just two days earlier, he had allegedly fired multiple shots at a Midland police officer during a vehicle pursuit, making Friday’s tragedy even more disturbing.
Now, loved ones are mourning the painful loss of Edward Scott, remembered as a beloved husband, family man, and cherished member of the community. Prayers continue to surround his wife, Laura Vasquez Scott, their family, and every person affected by this senseless tragedy.
Though his life was taken far too soon, Edward Scott’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Rest peacefully, Edward Scott. You will be deeply missed, and your memory will never be forgotten.
