Authorities identified the victim as Luke Sherman, 35, who was fatally shot after an escalating confrontation involving two drivers traveling westbound on Interstate 64. The suspect, Robert R. Farek, 48, of O’Fallon, was arrested and is currently being held at the St. Charles County Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

According to court documents, the incident began as a road rage dispute between Sherman, who was driving a dark gray 2019 Chevrolet Equinox with a coworker as a passenger, and Farek, who was operating a silver 2007 Toyota Prius. Investigators allege the confrontation intensified after both drivers engaged in aggressive driving maneuvers, including passing one another on the highway shoulder and abruptly braking in front of each other’s vehicles.

Authorities said the dispute continued as the vehicles approached the Winghaven Boulevard exit. Court records indicate both vehicles exited Interstate 64 and stopped on the exit ramp. Investigators reported that Sherman placed his SUV in park, exited the vehicle, and ran toward Farek’s driver’s side door. A coworker who witnessed the incident told detectives he was standing near the rear passenger side of the Equinox when he heard approximately four gunshots and then saw Sherman collapse to the ground.

Law enforcement officers later recovered a Smith & Wesson M&P .40-caliber handgun from inside Farek’s Prius. Investigators stated that no weapons were found on Sherman or his passenger. Authorities further reported that Farek remained inside his vehicle until after Sherman fell, then exited the Prius, approached the victim, and called 911. According to investigators, Farek told the emergency dispatcher, “Someone just attacked me and I just shot him.”

Police said Farek later told responding officers that Sherman had punched him through the driver’s side window and that his face was hurting. However, investigators noted that the medical examiner determined Sherman died from a single gunshot wound. The autopsy reportedly found no stippling or gunpowder tattooing, indicating there was no evidence of a close-contact gunshot wound.

Officials also confirmed that Farek is employed as a Public Works Superintendent for the City of Ballwin. Following his arrest, city officials announced that he has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

The fatal shooting remains under investigation by authorities in St. Charles County. Prosecutors allege the available evidence supports the second-degree murder charge, while investigators continue reviewing witness statements, forensic findings, and any available surveillance footage to determine the full sequence of events that led to the deadly Interstate 64 road rage encounter.
