One Dead, One Injured in Smithville Shooting; Suspect in Custody, Police Say

SMITHVILLE — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that left one person dead and another injured on Sunflower Street in northern Smithville. A suspect has been taken into custody and is being held at the Clay County Jail, according to police.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the neighborhood, where they discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and began providing aid before transporting the victims to a nearby hospital.

Police said one of the victims succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead. The second victim survived the shooting and remains under medical care. Officials have not released information regarding the individual’s condition.
