It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. John Alex Collier, who entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on July 27, 2026, at the age of 55. Surrounded by the unwavering love of his family, John passed away peacefully after courageously battling a rare and aggressive form of metastatic cancer. Though his earthly journey was far too short, his remarkable life was one defined by unwavering faith, selfless service, steadfast integrity, and an enduring love for his family and community.
Born on February 18, 1971, John built a life centered on the values he held most dear—God, family, compassion, and hard work. Those who knew him understood that his greatest purpose was not measured by professional accomplishments or recognition, but by the relationships he nurtured and the countless lives he touched through kindness, generosity, and genuine care.
For more than three decades, Dr. Collier faithfully served others through the profession he loved. As the proud owner and operator of Collier Dental, he dedicated 29 years to caring for patients in the Oxford-Lafayette community and 14 years serving the people of Pontotoc. Alongside his faithful wife and partner, Dr. Larissa Hammer Collier, he built more than a successful dental practice—they created a place where patients felt welcomed, respected, and genuinely cared for.
To his patients, John was never simply their dentist. He became a trusted friend who took the time to ask about their families, celebrate their milestones, and comfort them during difficult moments. He possessed a remarkable ability to calm anxious patients with his quick wit, contagious laughter, and warm personality. Long before appointments ended, nervous smiles had often been replaced with genuine laughter. His compassionate spirit transformed routine dental visits into meaningful connections, leaving an impact that extended far beyond oral health.
Above every professional achievement, however, John treasured his role as a husband and father. His family was the center of his world and the source of his greatest joy. He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Dr. Larissa Hammer Collier, whose steadfast love and partnership remained constant throughout every chapter of their life together.
He also leaves behind the children who filled his heart with immeasurable pride: Alexandra “Ally” Collier (29) and her fiancé, Grant; John Trenton “Trent” Collier (25); Luke Alexander Hammer (20) and his wife, Jennifer; Jude Wayne Hammer (16); Lexi Jo Hammer (14); JannaMae Eve Collier (6); and Jeb Lincoln Collier (4), along with numerous extended family members who were blessed by his love and guidance.
John was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Melvin Douglas Collier Jr. and Mae Lois Collier of Ruleville, Mississippi, as well as his cherished grandmother, Mildred Evelyn Collier, and other treasured relatives who undoubtedly welcomed him home with open arms.
Nothing brought John greater happiness than spending time with those he loved most. Whether working together on the family farm, sharing stories around the table, traveling to barbecue competitions, cheering passionately for Ole Miss athletics, or simply enjoying life’s everyday moments, he embraced every opportunity to create lasting memories. His booming laugh, playful sense of humor, and gift for storytelling could brighten any room, and his children always knew how deeply loved and supported they were. He never missed an opportunity to tell them how proud he was of each of them and encouraged them to pursue lives of purpose, character, and faith.
John’s influence reached far beyond his own family. His employees often described him as more than an employer—he was a mentor, encourager, and loyal friend. He invested in those around him, celebrating their successes and offering unwavering support during life’s challenges. His generosity, humility, and servant’s heart earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout the dental profession and the communities he faithfully served.
Even during his battle with cancer, John’s faith remained steadfast. He faced each challenge with remarkable courage, grace, and quiet determination, inspiring those around him through his resilience and unwavering trust in God’s plan. Though his illness tested his body, it never diminished his compassion, humor, or love for others.
While his family grieves the tremendous loss of his physical presence, they find comfort in knowing that John is now free from pain and resting in the eternal peace of heaven. They rejoice in the promise that he is home with the Lord, reunited with loved ones who went before him, and surrounded by everlasting joy.
John’s legacy will continue through the lives he shaped as a husband, father, physician, mentor, friend, and faithful servant. His kindness will be remembered in every patient he comforted, every employee he encouraged, every friend he supported, and every child whose life was forever changed by his unconditional love.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate John’s life and honor his extraordinary legacy during visitation on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at West Heights Baptist Church in Pontotoc, Mississippi. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m., with burial afterward in the church cemetery.
Though our hearts are broken by this tremendous loss, we remain deeply grateful for the gift of Dr. John Alex Collier’s life. His unwavering devotion to his family, his compassionate care for his patients, his steadfast faith, and his generous spirit have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
