Authorities have identified 33-year-old Alexis Dare of Desert Hot Springs as the passenger who died following a violent rollover crash on Interstate 10 early Wednesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the Cactus Rest Area. Investigators reported that a Tesla was traveling in the No. 1 lane when it was struck from behind by a Kia Forte that was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed.
CHP officials said the driver of the Kia failed to reduce speed to account for changing traffic conditions ahead. The force of the rear-end collision caused both the Tesla and the Kia to lose control before overturning into the center median.
During the rollover, Alexis Dare, who was riding as a passenger in the Kia, was ejected from the vehicle. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and provided assistance, but she suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.
The occupants of the Tesla and the Kia were also evaluated following the crash. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the extent of their injuries.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the events leading up to the crash. Investigators are reminding motorists of the importance of maintaining safe speeds, remaining attentive to traffic conditions, and leaving adequate following distance to help prevent serious highway crashes.
