Family, friends, and the communities of Altamont and Parsons, Kansas, are mourning the tragic loss of Ryan J. Myers, 38, of Altamont, and Samantha A. Cahow, 30, of Parsons, who lost their lives in a devastating motorcycle crash on Wednesday afternoon, July 29, 2026, along U.S. Highway 59 in Labette County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m., about two miles northeast of Altamont. Preliminary findings indicate that Myers was operating a northbound 1999 Harley-Davidson XL883 motorcycle with Cahow riding as a passenger when the motorcycle crossed the center line into the southbound lane for reasons that remain under investigation.

Authorities reported that the motorcycle collided head-on with a southbound 2020 Jeep Gladiator driven by Shaun T. Powell, 55, of Fort Scott. Investigators said Powell attempted to avoid the collision by steering to the right, but the vehicles collided before the crash could be prevented. The force of the impact ejected both Myers and Cahow from the motorcycle.

Emergency responders from local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services rushed to the scene following reports of the crash. Despite lifesaving efforts, Ryan J. Myers and Samantha A. Cahow were pronounced dead from the injuries they sustained. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
