The victim, César Gastélum, was reportedly creating content outside a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on Tuesday night when two men arrived on a motorcycle. According to the information provided, one of the men opened fire before both suspects fled the area.

The shooting occurred near the offices of the local prosecutor, adding to the urgency of the police response. Authorities launched an investigation as officers and prosecutors began working to identify those responsible and establish a possible motive.

Gastélum had built a substantial following online, reportedly attracting more than 650,000 followers on TikTok. He was known for comedy-focused videos and content connected to regional Mexican music. His social media presence also occasionally included references to the “bélico” lifestyle, a term that can carry associations with Mexico’s organized-crime culture.

Authorities Examine Possible Criminal Connection
Mexico’s Security Cabinet and local prosecutors are examining whether Gastélum’s online activity may have played a role in the attack. Preliminary information indicates that he had previously shared videos referencing a faction of a criminal organization, although authorities have not publicly identified a specific group as responsible.

Officials are therefore investigating several possibilities rather than confirming a motive. Detectives are expected to review surveillance footage, witness accounts and Gastélum’s online activity as they attempt to determine whether the killing was targeted.

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing and called for investigators to determine why the homicide occurred and for those responsible to face justice.

The case comes amid continuing violence in Sinaloa, a state that has faced prolonged conflict involving organized criminal groups. The killing has consequently renewed concerns about the risks faced by public figures and content creators operating in areas affected by criminal violence.

Livestream Killing Draws Wider Attention
Gastélum’s death is also being compared with the 2025 killing of beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, who was fatally shot while livestreaming from Jalisco. The similarities have intensified concerns about the vulnerability of online creators whose locations and activities can sometimes be publicly visible in real time.

Investigators have not established that the two cases are connected.

Authorities continue to investigate Gastélum’s killing, including the identities of the attackers, the motive and whether organized crime played a role. No conclusion about responsibility should be drawn until investigators release further verified findings.

The death has prompted an outpouring of reactions from followers and members of the online community, who have remembered Gastélum for the comedy and entertainment content that helped him build his large audience.
