CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Chesterfield County Police have arrested a 19-year-old Henrico man accused of shooting five people near the Virginia State University dormitories, authorities announced Saturday.
The shooting happened at approximately 1:28 a.m. on Aug. 15, 2026, in the 3300 block of Boisseau Street. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside the university’s dormitory area.
All five victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police said one victim, initially reported to have life-threatening injuries, was later upgraded to critical condition. The other four victims suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities said the victims’ names will not be released. Police provided the following information:
21-year-old male, nonstudent: Critical injuries
23-year-old male, nonstudent: Non-life-threatening injuries
19-year-old female, nonstudent: Non-life-threatening injuries
17-year-old male, nonstudent: Non-life-threatening injuries
20-year-old male, student: Non-life-threatening injuries
Suspect Found Hiding on Campus
Investigators identified Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Virginia, as a suspect in the shooting. Police said Harris is not a student at Virginia State University.
After an investigation and search for the suspect, officers located Harris inside Seward Hall on the VSU campus, where police said he was hiding in a closet.
Harris was taken into custody at approximately 4 p.m., roughly 14 hours after the shooting was reported.
Following his arrest, Harris was transported to the Chesterfield County Jail. Investigators obtained eight felony warrants against him: four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police said additional charges could be sought as the investigation continues. Harris is being held without bond.
Multiple Agencies Assist Investigation
The investigation involved a significant law enforcement response on and around the university campus. Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office assisted Chesterfield County investigators.
Several additional federal and state agencies have also offered assistance as detectives continue working to determine what led to the shooting and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have not released a motive or detailed information about the events immediately preceding the gunfire. Investigators are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses.
