The Johnston, Rhode Island community is mourning the sudden passing of Thomas E. “Tom” Mooney Jr., whose life was defined by service, compassion, leadership, and the countless lives he touched throughout his years.
Tom passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, leaving behind a legacy as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, coach, and friend. Those who knew him remembered him as someone who encouraged others, welcomed people with kindness, and always found ways to make a positive difference.
For more than 54 years, Tom shared his life with his beloved wife, Valerie Mooney of Johnston. Their journey together was built on love, commitment, and family. He was a proud father to Sherri Mooney and Tommy Mooney and a loving grandfather to Gia, Chloe, Valen, and Charliese.
Tom also leaves behind his brother John, sister-in-law Sandra, nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends who considered him more than a relative or acquaintance—but someone who was truly part of their family.
A proud veteran, Tom served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War with the 25th Infantry’s Wolfhounds Tunnel Rats. His bravery and dedication earned him two Purple Heart medals, honors that reflected the sacrifices he made while serving his country.
Even after his military service ended, Tom remained committed to supporting fellow veterans. He stayed connected through organizations including VFW Post 2396 and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), continuing his dedication to service and camaraderie.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Tom will be remembered for the personal impact he made on those around him. Whether through coaching, friendships, community involvement, or family moments, he had a gift for making people feel valued and supported.
As loved ones gather to honor his memory, they are holding onto the lessons, laughter, and countless memories he left behind.
