The Janesville community is continuing to grapple with the aftermath of a fatal shooting that left one person dead and two others injured, prompting a major investigation by local law enforcement.
The shooting was reported shortly after midnight on August 9, 2026, in the 100 block of South Academy Street. Authorities received multiple emergency calls concerning a disturbance involving several people. Gunfire was reportedly heard before officers arrived at the location.
When police reached the scene, they discovered three people suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders provided assistance before the victims were transported for medical treatment. One of the victims later died from injuries sustained in the shooting, while the other two were reported to have suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The deceased victim was identified as 25-year-old Jason Kaplan. Investigators have indicated that the people involved were believed to have known one another and that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident rather than a random attack.
The investigation led authorities to identify several people allegedly connected to the shooting. Multiple arrests were subsequently made as detectives continued gathering evidence and working to establish what happened before the gunfire.
Among those arrested was Marshaun Jones, 21, who was taken into custody in Monroe on August 10 following a search warrant. He faces serious charges connected to the fatal shooting, including first-degree intentional homicide and offenses involving attempted homicide and reckless endangerment.
Additional individuals were also arrested in connection with the case. Authorities identified Mantezz Granger, Charles Crenshaw III, Demetrius Cooper, and Tyshawn Howe among those taken into custody. Reported charges include homicide, attempted homicide, and reckless endangerment-related offenses.
During the early stages of the investigation, witnesses reportedly described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a gray SUV leave the area following the disturbance. Detectives have been working to establish the sequence of events and determine the specific roles of those involved.
For the Janesville community, the death has brought renewed grief and concern. A fatal shooting affects not only the immediate victims and their families but also friends, neighbors, and residents who are left trying to understand how violence could occur in their community.
The investigation and related criminal proceedings remain ongoing. Charges are allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
