Rachel Owens Saco Maine Shooting: Woman Survived Three Gunshot Wounds in 2014 Home Invasion, Not Dead
Rachel Owens was critically injured but survived a terrifying 2014 home invasion in Saco, Maine, after a masked gunman entered a friend’s home and shot her three times.
The attack happened during the early morning hours of December 18, 2014, at a home on Hillview Avenue. According to federal court records, Steve and Carol Chabot were hosting Owens, who was staying at their home when the intruder broke in. Steve Chabot called 911 at approximately 2:47 a.m. after the shooting.
Investigators determined that the gunman was dressed in dark clothing and wearing a black ski mask. The intruder entered the home and went to the room where Rachel was sleeping. She was shot three times before the attacker confronted Steve Chabot, who was also shot three times.
Rachel Owens’ Injuries
Owens suffered gunshot wounds to her right arm, right leg and the back of her head. She was initially in critical condition, and authorities feared she might not survive. She was transported to Maine Medical Center and underwent multiple surgeries.
Despite the severity of her injuries, Owens survived. In 2016, she testified during her husband’s federal trial and described the lasting effects of the shooting. She told jurors that she continued to struggle with everyday tasks involving her right hand and that a bullet remained lodged in the back of her head after causing brain damage.
Gregory Owens Convicted
The investigation eventually led authorities to Gregory Owens, Rachel’s husband. Prosecutors alleged that he traveled from Londonderry, New Hampshire, to Saco and carried out the attack.
Gregory Owens was subsequently convicted in federal court of interstate domestic violence and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. He was later sentenced to life in federal prison.
