It is with profound sadness that we extend our heartfelt condolences following reports concerning Matthew Mayich and the heartbreaking news of his death. His reported passing has left many in the hockey community deeply saddened, particularly those who followed his promising journey as a talented young defenseman.
Matthew had built an impressive hockey career through determination, discipline, and hard work. Before joining Arizona State University, he spent four seasons with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League and later played for Clarkson University. Arizona State announced his addition to its 2026–27 hockey program after a strong freshman season at Clarkson, where he recorded 15 points in 34 games.
His hockey journey also included being selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft. At Arizona State, he was listed as a defenseman and represented the kind of player whose commitment and experience brought great promise to the program.
Beyond statistics and accomplishments, Matthew will be remembered for the determination and passion he brought to the sport. For teammates, coaches, friends, and supporters, losing someone with so much potential is an especially painful experience.
