The latest official statewide incident information lists active fires in several California counties, but Atwater and Merced County are not among the locations identified for a major active wildfire. Residents should therefore rely on official local emergency notifications for information about any structure fire, vegetation fire or other incident currently affecting the City of Atwater.
Atwater is located in Merced County, where emergency agencies routinely coordinate responses involving fires, traffic incidents and other public-safety emergencies. Firefighters may also be called to nearby incidents outside the city as part of regional mutual-aid operations.

A separate traffic incident reported near Atwater on August 26 involved an overturned big rig on southbound Highway 99 near Franklin Road. The California Highway Patrol said a lane remained closed while crews worked to remove the truck and repair a damaged guardrail.
