LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Mandalay Bay shooting remains one of the deadliest mass-casualty attacks in modern U.S. history. On October 1, 2017, gunman Stephen Craig Paddock, 64, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino toward thousands of people attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival across the Las Vegas Strip.
According to the FBI, more than 22,000 people were attending the outdoor music festival when the shooting began at approximately 10:05 p.m. The gunfire continued for about 11 minutes, with Paddock firing more than 1,000 rounds into the crowd.
58 people killed at the concert
The attack initially resulted in 58 deaths, while hundreds of other people suffered gunshot wounds and other injuries during the shooting and ensuing chaos.
The FBI’s historical materials note that two law-enforcement officers attending the concert were among those killed. The overall death toll later reached 60 when two additional victims died from injuries sustained in the attack. The FBI has also documented hundreds of people wounded, along with many others who suffered injuries while attempting to escape.
Gunman fired from Mandalay Bay
Paddock had occupied a suite on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay, giving him a commanding view of the Route 91 festival grounds.
Investigators determined that he had brought a large collection of firearms and ammunition into the hotel room. The attack was carried out from the hotel toward the densely packed concert crowd below.
As concertgoers realized what was happening, thousands attempted to flee the festival grounds. The resulting panic created another layer of danger as people searched for shelter and tried to locate family members and friends.
Paddock died at the scene
Law enforcement officers eventually reached the hotel room. Before officers entered, Paddock had died by suicide.
The FBI subsequently worked with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on an extensive investigation examining Paddock’s background, behavior, finances, travel, communications and possible motivations.
No single motive established
One of the most significant findings from the federal investigation was that authorities could not identify one clear motive for the attack.
The FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit concluded that there was no evidence that Paddock was motivated by an ideological or political belief and found no evidence that he was acting on behalf of an extremist organization.
Investigators also concluded that Paddock acted alone and did not conspire with another person to carry out the attack. The FBI described his motivation as complex and concluded there was no single, clear explanation for why he committed the mass shooting.
Massive investigation followed
The investigation generated an enormous volume of evidence.
The FBI reported that investigators recovered approximately one petabyte of data and had to review roughly 21,500 hours of video footage. Hundreds of federal personnel participated in the effort to analyze the enormous amount of information generated by the investigation.
Investigators examined hotel records, surveillance footage, electronic communications, firearms, financial information and witness accounts in an effort to reconstruct Paddock’s actions before and during the attack.
Lasting impact on Las Vegas
The shooting profoundly affected survivors, victims’ families, first responders, musicians, hotel employees and the wider Las Vegas community.
In the years since the attack, survivors and families have continued to advocate for remembrance and healing.
A permanent memorial is also planned to honor those killed. In August 2026, organizers announced that the Forever One Memorial would break ground on October 2, 2026, commemorating the victims of the Route 91 tragedy.
A tragedy still remembered
Nearly nine years later, the Route 91 shooting continues to be remembered as a defining tragedy in Las Vegas history.
For survivors and families who lost loved ones, the incident remains more than a historical event. It represents the loss of friends, spouses, parents, children, colleagues and loved ones whose lives ended during a night that began as a country-music festival.
The official investigations have established that Paddock acted alone, but many questions surrounding his personal motivations have never produced a simple answer.
