Loxahatchee Shooting: Woman Killed, Suspect Arrested After West Palm Beach Hotel Standoff
LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. — A fatal shooting in Loxahatchee sparked a major law enforcement response Friday, September 4, after a woman was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds and the suspected shooter allegedly fled to downtown West Palm Beach, where he barricaded himself inside a hotel.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 1400 block of Tangle Orchid Trace in Loxahatchee. When deputies arrived, they found a woman who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly expanded beyond Loxahatchee after authorities learned that a man suspected of being involved in the shooting had fled the area.
Suspect Barricades Himself Inside West Palm Beach Hotel
At approximately the same time, West Palm Beach police received information from the Virginia Beach Police Department about a man reportedly involved in a shooting who had traveled to the area and was believed to be inside The Ben Hotel in downtown West Palm Beach.
Officers responded to the hotel and determined that the suspect was inside a seventh-floor room. Police established a perimeter around the area while efforts were made to safely take the suspect into custody.
The incident resulted in a significant police presence around the hotel, with portions of nearby streets temporarily closed or affected by traffic restrictions as officers worked to contain the situation.
Hours-Long Negotiations
Police negotiators spent several hours attempting to persuade the suspect to surrender peacefully.
When those efforts were unsuccessful, PBSO obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect. Authorities ultimately took the man into custody, ending the standoff without a reported struggle.
The suspect was identified by PBSO as Todd Wegrich. Reports indicate he was subsequently booked on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the woman’s death.
Because the case is active, the allegations against Wegrich should be understood as accusations unless and until established in court.
Investigation Continues
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Loxahatchee shooting, including what led to the woman’s death and the relationship between the victim and suspect.

West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo said the safety of residents, visitors and hotel guests was the department’s primary concern while officers worked to contain the suspect.
