According to authorities, the shooting happened at approximately 9:30 p.m. at the Southport Yacht Basin. Investigators said a person aboard a boat opened fire toward people gathered at the waterfront venue before fleeing by water.

The three people killed were later identified as Joy Rogers, 64, of Southport; Solomon Banjo, 36, of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Michael Durbin, 56, of Galena, Ohio. The six injured victims were identified by the city as Jackson Schurtz, William Parent, John Barlow, Lauren Buscher, Thomas Lafferty and Tammy Hirt-Huff. City officials later said all six injured victims had been released from the hospital.
Authorities said the suspect, Nigel Edge, 40, of Oak Island, was taken into custody after a U.S. Coast Guard crew spotted someone matching the description at a public boat ramp on Oak Island. He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.
Police said Edge allegedly fired from a boat toward the waterfront crowd. Authorities later described the location as targeted and characterized the attack as highly premeditated. Those statements are part of the authorities’ investigation and do not constitute a court finding of guilt.
The investigation involved Southport police, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Coast Guard. Authorities also appealed to witnesses and anyone with photographs or videos from the area to provide information that could assist the investigation.
The criminal case against Edge remains subject to court proceedings.
