The investigation into the Jesse Van Rootselaar shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, remains active months after the February 2026 tragedy that left nine people dead, including the shooter.
The B.C. RCMP continues to examine evidence connected to the February 10 shooting, including firearms, digital information, and other physical evidence, as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths. The RCMP has previously said determining the origins and roles of firearms involved remains an important part of the investigation.
Van Rootselaar, 18, was identified by police as the deceased suspect following the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence. RCMP said two firearms were recovered at the school, while additional firearms were seized at the residence. Investigators said the main firearm believed to have been used in the school shooting had not been recovered and that its origin remained unknown.
The February 10 attack resulted in the deaths of six people at the school and two additional victims at a nearby residence, along with Van Rootselaar, bringing the total number of deaths to nine. The school victims included an educator and students, while the two victims at the residence were identified by RCMP as Van Rootselaar’s mother and stepbrother.
Months later, questions surrounding the firearms remain an important part of the investigation. In August, heavily redacted court documents related to the case were released after media organizations sought access to records concerning the weapons. The documents contained limited information because substantial portions had been withheld.
The RCMP has also previously said investigators were reviewing the suspect’s online activity and digital footprint, as well as previous police or professional interactions involving Van Rootselaar. Physical evidence, witness information, video footage, and other investigative material have been examined as part of the broader inquiry.
The investigation is separate from other legal and governmental proceedings connected to the tragedy. In July, Tumbler Ridge RCMP stated that legal options announced by the British Columbia attorney general were separate and independent from the RCMP criminal investigation.
For the families of those killed and the Tumbler Ridge community, the investigation remains an important part of understanding what happened and how the tragedy unfolded.
As investigators continue their work, authorities have not indicated a final completion date. The RCMP has previously said the investigation will continue until investigative avenues have been exhausted and the available evidence indicates there are no additional leads to pursue.
