The Taunton, Somerset, community is mourning the loss of Lauren Jackson, 17, a young student whose life came to a tragic end following a mental-health crisis at Richard Huish College.
Lauren was an A-level student who, according to evidence heard during an inquest, had been experiencing mental-health difficulties for several years. Despite those struggles, she had continued making plans for her future, including preparing for university and taking driving lessons.
Her death has left her family, friends, teachers, and others who knew her facing an immense sense of loss.
Remembering Lauren Jackson
Lauren was remembered as a young woman whose future still held many possibilities. Her family had hoped to see her continue her education and pursue the plans she had been making for life beyond sixth form.
Evidence presented at the inquest described Lauren as having experienced periods of significant emotional and mental health difficulty during her teenage years. She had received professional support and attended appointments with mental health and children’s services.
In February, Lauren experienced a crisis at Richard Huish College. Staff responded, and emergency medical assistance was provided before she was taken to the hospital. Despite treatment, she died two days later with her parents at her bedside.
The inquest heard that Lauren’s death was ultimately recorded as suicide. The assistant coroner said that no one could have known with certainty what Lauren was going to do that day.
Richard Huish College, located on South Road in Taunton, is a sixth-form college serving students aged 16 to 19. The college says student well-being and individual support are central to its approach.
