Erik Brown Obituary, Cause of Death: Canadian Technical Diver Remembered for Role in Tham Luang Cave Rescue
The international diving and rescue community is mourning the reported passing of Erik Brown, a Canadian technical diver who died at the age of 44.
Brown was among the specialist divers who played an important supporting role in the extraordinary 2018 rescue of 12 young football players and their coach from Thailand’s flooded Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex.
Born and raised in Langley, British Columbia, Brown travelled to Chiang Rai after the Wild Boars football team became trapped inside the cave in June 2018. As an experienced technical diver, he joined the international effort to help reach and evacuate the stranded children and their coach.
During the dangerous operation, Brown helped transport air cylinders and other essential equipment through flooded passages. He also helped lay and maintain guide ropes that established a route through the complex cave system, supporting the teams working under extraordinarily difficult conditions.
Brown later documented spending approximately 63 hours inside the cave over nine days and seven missions, reflecting the demanding nature of the operation and the risks faced by the divers involved.
His contribution to the rescue was formally recognized in 2019, when the Canadian government awarded Brown the Medal of Bravery for repeatedly risking his life during the operation. He was also honored in Thailand for his contribution to the successful rescue.
But Brown’s life and career extended well beyond the Tham Luang mission.
He developed a respected career in technical diving and became involved in diving communities around the world. He co-founded Team Blue Immersion in Dahab, Egypt, before later establishing Hydronauts Diving on Koh Tao, Thailand.
Friends and family announced Brown’s death on September 26, 2026. His exact date and location of death, as well as the cause of death, have not been publicly disclosed.
Those who knew Brown have remembered him as kind, calm, adaptable, and deeply respected. Fellow divers and friends have shared tributes reflecting on the positive presence he brought to the people around him and the lasting impression he made within the international diving community.
For many, Brown’s legacy will forever be connected to the Tham Luang rescue — an operation that drew worldwide attention and demonstrated the extraordinary courage and cooperation of divers, rescuers, medical personnel, military teams, and volunteers from around the world.
Yet behind that historic mission was a man whose life was defined by much more than a single rescue. Through his work, friendships, and dedication to technical diving, Erik Brown became part of a community that will continue to remember his contributions.
At 44, his passing leaves a profound loss for his family, friends, colleagues, and fellow divers.
May Erik Brown rest in peace, and may his family and the international diving community find comfort in the memories of a life spent helping others and pursuing a demanding craft with courage and dedication.
